  • gilgamesh

I never even heard of such a thing until I was late teens/early twenties but it seems it was a topic of choice in a couple of history books I was previewing for my son.

Tanglewood's year 1 curriculum suggest it and in the book Mystery of History it also includes a lesson on Sumerians and one on gilgamesh.

I got a book the library had and noticed all the various names for false "gods"....one was shamash as the sun "god" and I was thinking hmmm thought that was what we call the middle candle on the hanukkiah ((although I had a printout where it was spelled shamus and I can't find it now))

as you know according to the urban legend gilgamesh travels to see the guy utnapishtim who build the boat to withstand the flood, which in their version only lasted a week.  I wonder if the tale just got twisted by the time it was written down.  Like maybe after being out of the ark a few generations the people went right back to worshiping things created instead of the Creator and that's why the story eventually got written down using false "gods" and details changed....ya know just embelished it or something

another thing that disturbed me was that the guy, George Smith, who first read the epic about gilgamesh meeting the guy, utnapishtim,  who lived thru the flood, was really excited about how it seemed related to the story of Noah in the Bible.  Was that guy tripping on something?  I mean how can you read such twistedness and get excited?  I wanted to puke reading the account as recorded personally.

wonder if mt nimush and ararat are the same mtns?  My son has a book on dinosaurs and in the back it tells of many other civilizations that also have their version of the Flood ... so it's possible

    http://www.earth-history.com/Earth-06.htm  has an interesting text???

    Conclusions chapter 6

' The Biblical story of the Flood was 'borrowed' from the much older story of Gilgamesh.

    * Most of the Sumerian / Babylonian Gods have their counterpart in the different Godly names in the Bible:

'The Most High God' was the Sumerian God AN

'EL' was the Sumerian God ENLIL

'YA'EL' was the Sumerian God ANU

'YAH' was the Sumerian God ENKI ((in the book I got it calls this 3rd lesser and kinder "god" ea and that this one has a sense of humor))

These last three Gods were the leaders of the Sumerian Gods (The Triad of Gods)

    * Noah and his offspring belonged to the 'Anakim' and they were Giants.

At least the book I checked into says right on the cover a look at mesopotamian myths and legends ((in other words not passing it off as truth...what a relief))

SO today we will just go over the account of the Flood right from the Bible and use a mini-book to remind us.  or here

  • Oh that sound like a challenge - you are right about using the Bible with a few extra facts, for we don't want to focus on the pagan dieties.
