  • Persuasive Speech

I talked about how I was grieved by the passing of amendment 2 last fall in our state.  I talked about how the amendment wasn't just about making stem cell research legal, but rather in the words of the major research group supporting it, it was so down the road they could gain access to embryoes for research.  That is the part that grieved me and I did think that research would be tax payer funded but one kid in class said after my speech that he didn't want to start a fight and he did agree that amendment 2 was misleading but he reiterated the fact that the amendment was only about stem cell research remaining legal and he said the major institute that will be doing the research first is privately funded....so I rebutted that may be so but they have much more money than I or any other couples who would like to adopt these embryoes and so this institute will just buy them up to kill them.  This kid is getting a degree in mechanical engineering - he said focus is biomedical...so of course he would be more open to stem cell research...I mentioned one of the many alternatives - bone marrow derived stem cells, but there are also umbilical cord blood stem cells and maybe some more out there.  I never said I was against stem cell research just against the killing of embryoes to obtain them when other alternatives were available.

However another girl came up to me and asked me not to question her speech because she made hers on being for embryonic stem cell research but now after listening to me was no longer sure....so YAY....my persuasive speech at least got one person thinking.

One more speech / group assignment to go....and then that speech credit is all mine...PHEW
